Daily Expense Tracker · Last updated: 10 August 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how the Daily Expense Tracker mobile
application (package in.dailyexpensetracker.app)
collects, uses, and safeguards your information. By using the app you agree to
the practices described here.
1. Summary in plain words
- Your transactions, budgets, invoices, day notes, per-transaction notes, and analytics are stored on your device in a local database. We do not upload your personal ledger to our servers.
- With your permission, the app may read payment-related notifications shown by apps on your device. Notification content is processed locally and is not uploaded to our servers.
- When you sign in, we store your name, email, and phone number on our secure backend so we can verify your account and power shared bill features.
- Split bills, group splits (trips/parties), and their chat messages are stored on our backend so the other participants can see them.
- We do not sell your data. Google AdMob may collect advertising identifiers when ads are shown.
2. Information we collect
2.1 Information you provide
- Name, email address, phone number — entered at sign-up. Sent to our backend for account verification (one-time email OTP) and for matching shared bills by phone number. A copy of your profile is also stored locally on your device.
- Profile photo (optional) — stored locally on your device only (base64 in the local database).
- Transactions, budgets, recurring payments, invoices, day notes, per-transaction notes, custom categories — stored locally on your device only.
- Split bills and split chat messages — when you create or join a split, the split title, amounts, member names, phone numbers, and 1:1 chat messages are stored on our backend so the participants can see them in their app.
- Group splits and group chat — when you create or join a group (for a trip, party, etc.), the group name, budget, category, member names and phone numbers, the expenses each member logs (payer, amount, and note), and the group chat messages are stored on our backend so all members can see and settle up.
- Feedback — if you use Profile → Send Feedback, the message and star rating you submit, together with your name, email, phone number, and the app version, are sent to the developer by email so we can respond and improve the app.
2.2 Information accessed via Android permissions
-
Notification Access (
BIND_NOTIFICATION_LISTENER_SERVICE) —
a special-access permission you grant manually from
Settings → Apps → Special access → Notification access.
When granted, the app filters notifications on your device and processes only
payment-related notifications for automatic expense detection. Notification content
is processed locally.
Content is parsed entirely on your device to record your expenses, and is
never transmitted to us or used for advertising. Notifications from
messaging and social apps (WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, etc.) are ignored. You can
use the app without this permission via manual entry and screenshot OCR. Revoke anytime
from the same Settings screen.
The app does not access your message inboxes, chats, or one-time-password messages.
-
Camera — used only when you choose to take a profile photo or capture a
receipt. Images are processed/stored locally and not uploaded to our servers.
-
Photos / Media (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES) — used when you pick a profile
photo, receipt image, bank statement PDF, or payment screenshot from your gallery.
The app accesses only files you explicitly select. Screenshot OCR runs on-device.
-
Biometric (USE_BIOMETRIC, USE_FINGERPRINT) — optional App Lock.
Matching is handled by Android; we never receive your fingerprint or face data.
-
Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS) — daily digests, budget alerts,
transaction confirmations, and split / group updates you have enabled.
-
Boot receiver (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED), Foreground service
(FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE)
— re-arms scheduled local notifications and keeps the notification listener
running after reboot when Auto-detect is ON, so transaction detection continues
on aggressive OEM devices.
-
Internet — account sign-in (OTP email), split & group bill and chat
sync, real-time split / group notifications (Socket.IO), feedback email, and Google AdMob ads.
2.3 Information collected automatically
-
Session token (JWT) — stored in the Android Keystore after sign-in
so API calls to our backend are authenticated. Cleared on logout or account deletion.
-
Advertising identifier & ad-related data — Google AdMob collects
an Android Advertising ID, approximate location from IP, device model, and similar
data to show ads. Governed by
Google’s Privacy Policy.
You can limit ad personalization in your device’s Ad Settings.
3. How we use information
- To verify your account via a one-time email code at sign-up.
- To populate your local ledger from notifications, screenshots, bank-statement imports, or manual entry.
- To sync split bills, group splits, and chat between the participants who share them.
- To deliver budget alerts, daily digests, and split / group notifications you have enabled.
- To respond to and act on feedback you send us.
- To display ads through Google AdMob.
4. Data storage and retention
On your device: transactions, budgets, recurring payments, invoices,
day notes, per-transaction notes, profile photo, analytics, and most settings live in a
local SQLite database.
On our servers: account credentials (email, name, phone); split-bill
records and split chat messages; group splits (name, budget, category, members, expenses)
and group chat messages; and the in-app notification feed for split / group events.
We do not store your personal transaction ledger on our servers.
Delete your account from Profile → Delete Account to remove your
server-side account and wipe local data. Uninstalling the app also removes on-device data.
5. Sharing of information
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We share data only with:
-
Our transactional email provider — solely to deliver the one-time verification code and,
when you submit feedback, to deliver your feedback email to the developer.
-
Other split and group participants — the split / group title, amounts, expenses, and the
names/phone numbers you enter (so everyone can see and settle up in their app).
-
Google AdMob — advertising identifiers as described in Section 2.3.
-
Authorities — where required by applicable law.
6. Children
Daily Expense Tracker is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect
personal information from children. Contact us to request deletion if you believe a child
has provided information.
7. Your choices
- Deny or revoke Android permissions (including Notification Access) from system settings.
- Turn Auto-detect OFF in Profile without revoking OS permission.
- Opt out of personalized ads in your device Ad Settings.
- Leave or delete a split / group to stop sharing that data with its participants.
- Delete your account and all local data from Profile → Delete Account.
8. Security
Local data is protected by Android sandboxing. Optional App Lock adds biometric
authentication. Network calls use HTTPS. Session tokens are stored in the Android Keystore.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the
latest revision. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
